Joseph Rudyard Kipling (30 december 1865, Bombay, India - 18 januari 1936, Londen) was een Britse schrijver en dichter. Zijn bekendste werk is ongetwijfeld The Jungle Book, een fabel over het jongetje Mowgli dat door wilde dieren wordt opgevoed en die tegenwoordig vooral bekend is door de diverse films en tekenfilms die er door Walt Disney van zijn gemaakt. Deze filmversies doen de verhalen echter geen recht. Andere bekende boeken van hem zijn Plain tales from the Hills en Kim. Rudyard Kipling ontving in 1907 de Nobelprijs voor de literatuur. Rond de vorige eeuwwisseling werd hij zeer veel gelezen en hogelijk gewaardeerd; later nam dit af waarbij zeker een belangrijke rol speelde dat zijn boeken verhalen en gedichten grotendeels in koloniaal India spelen en ook het kolonialisme als volstrekt natuurlijk gegeven behandelen. De laatste decennia is echter wel een herwaardering opgetreden.
